Job Opportunity: Consultant Psychiatrist - Adult and Later Life Services

 

Job Overview

Our client is seeking a dedicated and highly skilled Consultant Psychiatrist to join their esteemed hospital team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the provision of 20 acute inpatient beds and outpatient consultant adult and later life services. This role requires clinical leadership within a Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) and a commitment to advancing mental health care in alignment with best international practices and the Mental Health Act 2001.

They offer specialist services in Substance Misuse, Psychotic Disorders, Eating Disorders, Psychiatry of Later Life, and Adolescent Disorders. Affiliated with several prominent universities for undergraduate and postgraduate healthcare professional programmes, the hospital runs an extensive clinical research programme. Committed to innovative and effective treatment programmes, they accept referrals nationally and internationally, providing excellent clinical treatment and care while also focusing on training healthcare professionals and conducting research to enhance patient outcomes and quality of life.

 

Job Title: Consultant Psychiatrist

Location: South Dublin

Hours: Full Time / Permanent

Salary:  €217,000 - €234,000 DOE

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Clinical Leadership: Provide clinical leadership to the Multidisciplinary Team, including direct supervision and line management of trainees and specialty doctors.
  • Service Development: Play a pivotal role in reviewing and developing adult and later life services and relevant programmes.
  • Programme Development: Develop a comprehensive range of outpatient services, including treatments for mood/anxiety disorders, psychoses, and behavioural and psychological symptoms in dementia (BPSDs).
  • Needs Assessment: Assist in identifying unmet service needs and propose solutions for the presenting patient population.
  • Patient Care: Oversee both inpatient and outpatient responsibilities and participate in the consultant out-of-hours on-call rota.
  • Clinical Governance: Engage in the Clinical Governance structure at the hospital.
  • Teaching and Research: Actively participate in teaching and research, contributing to the hospital's role as a teaching institution.

Direct Care Role

  • Assess mental health problems using a biological, psychological, and social approach, cognizant of the spiritual and cultural needs of patients and their carers.
  • Conduct assessments that include cognitive and affective functioning as well as social and cultural domains.
  • Consider different etiological factors and plan holistic interventions.
  • Possess skills for analyzing psychological and social systems.
  • Integrate humanistic and scientific approaches.

Leadership and Management

  • Facilitate input into both inpatient and outpatient service development and the implementation and maintenance of clinical policy.
  • Involve in policy development.
  • Understand and refer patients appropriately for different types of psychological interventions.
  • Prescribe and monitor side-effects of a range of pharmacological therapies.
  • Refer appropriately for social, spiritual, or cultural interventions.
  • Integrate various approaches for the best possible combinations for patients and their caregivers, based on need and scientific evidence.
  • Skillfully sift scientific evidence.
  • Provide information to patients and carers about the implications and prognosis of psychiatric conditions.
  • Assess and assure the quality of services, and develop educational programmes.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Ensure that individual care plans are developed and discussed with each patient and updated regularly by the Multi-disciplinary team as per Article 15 of S.I. No 551 of 2006; Mental Health Act 2001 (Approved Centres) Regulations 2006.
  • Manage Senior Registrars, NCHDs assigned, providing training and supervision at all times.
  • Keep all required records, including the full and appropriate use of the MHIS as designated by the Hospital Management Team or Clinical Director.
  • Ensure that all documentation is up to date in line with relevant hospital policies, including Private Health Insurance Claim Form completion, Private Health Insurer requests for additional medical reports, and Discharge Summaries to referrers.
  • Collaborate with other Community Mental Health Teams to ensure smooth and timely transfer of patients into and out of our client's services.

Requirements:

  • Full registration in the General Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland or entitlement to be so registered; and
  • Possession of the MRCPsych or equivalent thereto; and
  • Registration as a specialist in the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners, maintained by the Medical Council of Ireland in the speciality of Adult and Psychiatry of Later Life
  • Seven years of satisfactory postgraduate training and experience in the medical profession, including five years in psychiatry, of which three were in adult and later life psychiatry.
  • A satisfactory knowledge of the administration of psychiatric services.
  • Possess a high standard of professional attainment and the requisite knowledge and ability for the proper discharge of the duties of the post.
  • Be free from any defect or disease which would render you unsuitable to hold the position and be in a state of health which would indicate an ability to render an efficient service.
